The Canadiens’ newly acquired centreman Scott Gomez has just concluded a conference call with Montreal journalists. He is in Alaska, on a fishing trip.

Gomez said the trade is part of the business and he’s a little disappointed that he didn’t have a chance to play more for New York coach John Tortorella. But he said he’s excited to be playing in the “mecca of hockey.”

According to RDS, the Canadiens have extended a contract offer to potential unrestricted free agent Alex Kovalev, the second UFA to receive an offer from Bob Gainey after Mike Komisarek. Gainey says he will continue to speak to the Kovalev and Komisarek camps up to (and beyond?) the July 1 noon ET launch of free-agent season.

That means Saku Koivu and Alex Tanguay will have to wait until after July 1 before receiving any offers from the Canadiens, the French-language sports network says.

In other news, the Canadiens have extended qualifying offers to restricted free agents Christopher Higgins, Tomas Plekanec, Guillaume Latendresse, Matt D’Agostini, Gregory Stewart and Kyle Chipchura.

My Birthday Wish For The 2009 NHL Draft

nhl_2009nhldraft_logo_20090414_feature

Tonight it’s the 2009 NHL draft from Montreal and it’s also my birthday. With the Montreal Canadiens drafting at number 18 I can’t wait to see who Habs GM Bob Gainey will draft.

Also there’s a lot of rumors going around that Vincent Lecavalier will be traded to Montreal? Will it happen? Or will Gainey surprise us with something else?

Mr. Gainey all I’m asking from you on my birthday is a wise choice on the draft. Is it too much to ask for?

Don’t make the mistake of the1980 draft. Don’t  draft a Doug Wickenheiser when you could draft a Denis Savard. Habs Fans know how that draft choice went.

Games     Goals   Assists    Points

Savard           1196      476      864       1337

Wickenheiser   556       111      165        286

The Montreal Canadiens have a new general manager.

Charles Montgomery Burns, who already owns Springfield’s Nuclear Power plant, is now the new GM of the Habs.

How will Mr.Burns’ hiring help the Habs?

When asked during the press conference about his plans for the franchise, Burns simply replied, “Excellent.”

When asked to be a little more specific, he looked at his assistant, Mr. Smithers, and ordered him to release the hounds. With dozens of dogs running towards the reporters, the conference abruptly ended.

koivu

Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu still has no idea if he’ll be part of the Habs next season. According to  Don Baizley who’s koivu’s agent Habs GM Bob Gainey has talked with him but didn’t make an offer yet.

“Saku would like to stay in Montreal, but we’re waiting to see what the team has in mind,” Baizley said.

Koivu has been with the Montreal Canadiens since 1995. In 1999 he was team captain. He never got a problem getting a contract with the team, but this time the Habs may not offer him a contract.

Gainey stated numerous times that the unrestricted agents will be dealt with after the draft.

Is Koivu staying in Montreal?

My thoughts

I believe Koivu won’t be back in Montreal. If Gainey had plans for him,he would’ve offered him a contract a long time ago.

I would like for him to stay, but  injuries trought the years have slowed him down.

He played 9 seasons with the Habs. During his stay, he played 485 games, with 21 goals and 81 assists for a total of 102 points.

Joined on the phone by RDS, Bouillon didn’t want to comment.

Sources say that a few teams are interested in his services.

We wish Francis Bouillon the best of luck.
