Minnesota Wild pursuing Saku Koivu

After committing $30 million over six years to Martin Havlat during the flurry of the first day of free agency, Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher turned his focus Thursday to Saku Koivu, the top center currently on the NHL’s open market. Koivu would fill a glaring need at a critical position for Minnesota and, in turn, be able to play with his younger brother, Mikko.

In a conference call, Fletcher confirmed the team’s desire to sign Koivu, who has played his entire career for the Montreal Canadiens. Saku is 34, eight years older than Mikko, who is the franchise’s clear cornerstone now that Marian Gaborik has signed with the New York Rangers.

“Certainly, we’ve expressed some interest,” Fletcher said. “He’s a great hockey player. There aren’t a lot of centermen on the marketplace.

“There’s certainly nobody of Saku’s caliber out there.”

Don Baizley, who serves as the agent for both brothers, declined to comment on the situation until “Saku’s contract is done.”

That doesn’t mean a deal will be done with Minnesota, of course, as Fletcher acknowledged.

“I’d be surprised if 10 or 15 teams haven’t reached out to him by this point,” the GM said. “I’m not sure where the process will go, but he’s a terrific hockey player.

“I certainly sense some interest, but there’s a lot of good situations out there for centermen.”

Koivu has been with Montreal since 1995. He had 16 goals and 34 assists last season, right around his career averages for full seasons. He missed most of the 1999-2000 season because of a shoulder injury and most of the 2001-02 season while recovering from abdominal cancer.

Koivu’s parents, who live in Finland, certainly have their preference among Saku’s many options.

“It’s one of their dreams for their kids to play on the same team,” Mikko said earlier this week in an interview with the Star Tribune newspaper. “There’s no doubt it would be special for all of us if it can happen, but we’ll see.”

Mike Komisarek wanted a fresh start

It’s the first time Komisarek spoke about being a Toronto Maple Leafs.

He stated he needed a fresh start with a new team and help the Leafs in the coming years.

He thanked the Montreal Canadiens fans for their support and also for the support the fans gave him when his mother passed away in 2005.

“The Canadiens were in the race until the end,but I needed a new challenge, said Komisarek.  It’s nice being in Toronto, where hockey is also a passion.”

Alex Kovalev update

In a previous post I mentioned  that it’s unlikely kovalev will be back with the Montreal Canadiens.

It is believed that the Habs offered him a two-year offer, believed to be in between $8.5 million to $9 million per season.

But with the signings Mike Cammalleri and Brian Gionta, pulled kovalev’s offer of the table.

Earlier today it was rumored that both sides would meet for a new deal, but Scott Greenspun who’s Kovalev’s agent stated that the Canadiens are no longer in the running.

He does have several offers, but it’s likely he’ll take a few days to examine them.

Teams show interest for Alex Kovalev

With his chance of signing with the Canadiens gone, two teams appearently are talking with Kovalev.

The Los Angeles Kings and the Washington Capitals are the two teams that are considering to give him a contract.

The Avangard team from the KHL made him an offer.

No Canadiens at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic

Hockey Canada named the 46 players who are invited to the Olympic training camp. None of the players are from the Montreal Canadiens.

Habs equipment manager Pierre Gervais will be part of the team. It will be his third consecutive Olympics.

Congratulations Pierre!

It’s not a secret that Mathieu Dandenault wants to be back with the Habs. There’s only one problem. Bob Gainey  doesn’t seem to want him back.

Dandenault received an offer from the Boston Bruins made him an offer yesterday, but he was waiting to see if Gainey was going to call him back.

It seems that he waited too long since Boston signed Byron Bitz instead.

Now Dandenault is in trouble. Since the Bruins don’t really need him anymore what are his options?  He can probably negotiate with Gainey and come back with the Habs with a pay cut.

Saku Koivu and Minnesota Wild rumors

Earlier I reported that the Wild are interested in Saku Koivu. According to sources the Wild offered Koivu a three year contract.

Koivu is reportedly thinking about the offer.

* Saku take the deal, Gainey won’t call you! Your career is over with the Habs.

more on this as it becomes available.

Saku Koivu and the Minnesota Wild?

According to reports,The Minnesota Wild  are working hard to sign Saku Koivu.

Koivu is currently on vacation in his native Finland.

Is Bob Gainey’s work done?

Habs GM Bob Gainey made some major changes.  He didn’t offer a  contract to any of the players in Montreal.

It’s safe to say the Saku Koivu and Alex Tanguay are gone. What about Alex Kovalev?  Is there room for him on the team?  We’ll see what Gainey or for that matter Kovalev decide to do.

On thing’s for sure, the 2009-2110 edition of the Montreal Canadiens have a lot to prove.
